Phased In-Person Learning Plan

Nooksack Valley students will begin to incrementally return to in-person instruction tentatively beginning October 13th with our K-5 students. The district, with the guidance of the Health Department, has developed a phased-in approach allowing 2-3 weeks between each phase.Implementation and the timeline for each phase could vary depending on a variety of factors including; continued feedback and approval from the Whatcom County Health Department and the time necessary to coordinate school-based services such as transportation, food services, cleaning, and the change in instructional models.

We are committed to providing you updates on moving to these in-person phases. If COVID case numbers significantly change, it may impact our phased approach to offer in-person instruction.

The phases and tentative dates are described below.  More specific details will be coming from your principal and school.

Phase IK-12 Small groups

Currently,we are bringing small groups of students with no internet connectivity and some students who have special needs at all levels. This phase began on September 14thin most of our school buildings.

Phase IIK-5th Hybrid 2 full days per week, Pre K, Headstart 2 Half days

October 13this a target date for students in grades K-5 to return to in-person instruction in a hybrid model.  Half of the students in each building would attend 2 days a week on an “every other day”, “A/B” schedule. Group A would attend Tuesdays &Thursdays, Group B would attend Wednesdays & Fridays. Mondays would remain an NV@ Home learning day for all students. This will allow teachers and students to learn and practice the routines for health and safety in smaller groups in preparation to move to 4 full days per week.

October 20this a tentative date for Pre-K Students (Headstart/Developmental Preschool) to return to in-person instruction 2 days per week, half days in the AM.

Elementary principals and teachers will communicate specific schedules and days with students and families.

Middle School and High School would continue to phase in small groups of students with no connectivity and some students with special needs.

Phase III:  K-5th4 Full days per week and Middle School/High School Hybrid 1/2 days

October 27this a target date for all K-5 students to move to 4 full days per week at school with Monday’s remaining an NV@ Home learning day for all.

November 3rd  is a tentative date for Middle school and High school students return to a hybrid in-person schedule, half days AM,  two days a week—in Alpha groups by last name, Students A-K attend Tues & Thurs, Students L-Z attend Wed & Fri, alternate days students continue synchronous learning at home, with Mondays continuing to be a NV @ Home remote synchronous learning for all.

Building principals and teachers will communicate specific schedules and days with students and families.

Phase IV: Middle School and High School Hybrid 4 full days

On November 30thto January 29th,  Middle School and High School would remain on a Hybrid schedule by Alpha groups,  moving to full days from half days Tues-Friday, with Mondays becoming asynchronous learning for all students.   Principals and teachers will communicate specific schedules and days with students and families.

Pre K and K-5thstudents would remain on Phase III In-person plan.  Consideration will be given to transition to full time, 5 days a week as conditions permit.

The district will continue to offer a remote online learning option for families who do not yet feel comfortable having their students return to school. Families will be contacted by school staff to confirm those who want to continue with remote learning.
